Hi my name is Katie, I am 16yrs old and I have had Type 1 Diabetes since I was 3 1/2yrs old. Growing up with an incurable disease has definitely been a challenge. I cannot remember the last time I was able to eat/drink something, non- sugar free, without worrying about what my sugar will do.
As I get older, I will be doing more activities on my own like driving and mission trips, and I feel getting a Diabetic Alert Dog (D.A.D.) will help me be more independent, help bring my blood sugar levels back to a normal rate, and over all make me feel safer wherever I may be.
And on June 23rd, 2014, I recieved a 7 month old female black lab puppy that I named Rue!
Within the first eight months of having Rue, she helped lower my A1C (a diabetics A1C is the calculation of what numbers the diabetic is averaging for their blood sugar and it is the most important number a diabetic tries to maintain) from a 9.5, which is what is has been for 5 plus years, down to a 7.0! I have never ever been in the 7s! Rue is ultimately insuring me a longer, healthier life and I am so beyond blessed to have my blood sniffing, life- saving goofball by my side though every step of this long and rough journey!
I also want to say a big 'Thank you' to everyone for your support as I walk through this journey! It really means the world to me and my family!
